DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Mass rapid transit project promoter Fitram has awarded the National Consortium for Integrated Mobility a 28.99bn pesos contract to design and construct civil works and railway systems on the first 10·5 km section of the Santo Domingo monorail.

The CNMI consortium is made up in equal parts of Constructora Moyeda and Hércules Construcciones de Monterrey (both Mexican), and Sanesto MG Ingeniería and Grupo Força Diseño & Ingeniería (both Dominican). he two Mexican companies are already working on monorail Lines 4 and 6 currently taking shape in Monterrey.

The first section of the Santo Domingo monorail will serve 12 stations. The line will start from the Centro Olímpico complex in the city centre, where interchange will be provided to metro lines 1 and 2. It would run to Av Charles de Gaulle in the east, following the Avenida 27 de Febrero and Las Américas motorways.

A second phase would extend the line westwards by 7.5 km from Centro Olímpico to Pintura, also following Av 27 de Febrero. The third phase would add another 7.2 km following Prolongacion Av 27 de Febrero to the intersection of the Duarte motorway. Here it would interchange with an extension of metro Line 2 which opened in February.

Initially the monorail would be operated by four-car units with capacity for 562 passengers. Running at a minimum interval of 90 sec at peak times, this would give a capacity of up to 22 480 passengers/h per direction. The line will be designed to accommodate six-car sets to increase capacity to meet future demand.
