Koleje Dolnośląskie, the regional rail operator in Lower Silesia, Poland, has ordered a further 10 ecodiesel trains from Pesa, exercising the option provided for in the contract. This brings the total number of eco-diesel trains ordered by the company to 20.
The first of the new trains are scheduled to arrive in Lower Silesia from June 2027.
The new trains will be used primarily on the region’s non-electrified railway lines, where passenger transport is currently provided by diesel trains.
The Lower Silesian Voivodeship is pursuing the development of passenger rail transport, which is based on three key areas: the reopening of lines that have been closed for decades, the acquisition of modern rolling stock, and an increase in the number of kilometres covered by the regional operator’s trains.
By expanding the network and increasing train frequencies, residents of several towns and villages will have better access to rail transport. At the same time, the new trains will enable the operator to provide better services on non-electrified lines.
Eco-diesel trains and EMUs from Pesa
One of the most important lines targeted is the Podsudecka Main Line, running between Legnica – Świdnica – Kamieniec Ząbkowicki. Around 145,000 people live along this route, and services are currently operated using diesel trains.
The trains currently in service have a capacity almost half that of the five-railcar Elf trains, and this purchase will enable two vehicles to be coupled together, providing a capacity very close to that available on electrified lines.
Koleje Dolnośląskie continues, in parallel, to take delivery of the Elf electric trains manufactured by Pesa. In August 2026, the operator took delivery of the last of the 20 Elf units ordered as part of a project funded by the European Union.
The company received EUR 145 million (618 million zlotys) from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO) for the purchase of the 20 electric trains.
In early September, the operator Koleje Dolnośląskie also announced that it had secured additional European funding of EUR 35 million (150 million zlotys) for the purchase of further Elf electric trains from Pesa.
In the first half of 2026, Koleje Dolnośląskie carried over 14 million passengers.
