
The UK government has reaffirmed a raft of railway investment for Wales, amounting to a substantial package worth £14bn (about €16.4bn). This may be met with some surprise, given that transport matters are the responsibility of the devolved government in Cardiff. However, the funding settlement comes from London, and with elections due for the Welsh Assembly in May, the timing of this announcement has raised some eyebrows.
