TANZANIA: Vossloh is to supply turnouts and rail fastenings for two sections of the 1 200 km electrified standard gauge railway which is being built to connect the Indian Ocean port of Dar es Salaam with Mwanza at Lake Victoria.

On April 22 Vossloh announced contracts totalling €30m to supply track components for the 294 km Makutupora – Tabora Phase 3 of the corridor and the 130 km Tabora – Isaka Phase 4, which are being built by Turkish engineering, procurement and construction contractor Yapi Merkezi on behalf of Tanzania Railways Corp.

Vossloh will manufacture approximately 130 turnouts at Ystad in Sweden, while rail fastening systems for 840 000 sleepers will be supplied from its ‘Factory of the Future’ at Werdohl in Germany.

The line is being designed for freight trains running at up to 120 km/h and passenger trains at up to 160 km/h.

‘This ambitious rail project is a driver of development for East Africa’, said CEO Oliver Schuster on April 22. ‘We are proud to contribute to this important undertaking.’
