Few railroads in North America can claim the longevity, authenticity, and continued relevance of the Strasburg Rail Road. Nestled in the rolling farmland of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, this remarkable line is widely recognized as America’s oldest continuously operating railroad, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience genuine steam-era railroading in the 21st century.

Unlike many heritage operations that were reconstructed or revived decades after abandonment, the Strasburg Rail Road has operated—continuously—since its founding in the early 19th century. Today, it combines historic preservation, working railroad operations, and a robust calendar of excursions that draw families, rail enthusiasts, and tourists from around the world.

Early History and Founding (1832–1900)

The Strasburg Rail Road was chartered in 1832 during a pivotal moment in American transportation history. At the time, canals dominated freight movement, and the nearby Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad threatened to bypass the town of Strasburg entirely.

To maintain economic relevance, local business leaders secured a charter from the Pennsylvania legislature to build a short connecting railroad. Construction progressed quickly, and by 1837 the line was in operation—initially powered by horse-drawn cars before transitioning to steam locomotives in the 1850s.

Throughout the 19th century, the railroad functioned primarily as a freight and passenger feeder line, linking Strasburg with the larger rail network. Ownership changed hands several times, but the line remained an important local artery for agricultural products, milling operations, and regional commerce.

Decline and Survival (1900–1958)

Like many shortline railroads, Strasburg faced mounting challenges in the early 20th century. The rise of electric streetcars and automobiles dramatically reduced passenger traffic, while trucking began eroding freight revenues.

By the 1950s, the railroad was on the brink of abandonment. Declining business, storm damage, and regulatory complications left the line financially unstable. In 1958, the owners filed for abandonment—a move that would have ended more than a century of continuous operation.

However, in a remarkable turn of events, a group of dedicated rail enthusiasts and local investors stepped in to save the line. Their successful purchase of the railroad in November 1958 marked the beginning of a new chapter—one that would transform Strasburg into a pioneer of the modern heritage railroad movement.

Birth of a Tourist Railroad (1959–Present)

Tourist operations began almost immediately in January 1959, making Strasburg one of the earliest examples of a preserved steam railroad in the United States.

Within a year, steam locomotives returned to the line, and the railroad quickly gained national attention. Its relatively short route—approximately 4.5 miles each way—proved ideal for scenic excursions, while its location in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country provided a picturesque backdrop.

Over the decades, the Strasburg Rail Road has evolved into a world-class preservation and operations facility, featuring:

• One of the most respected railroad mechanical shops in North America
• Ongoing freight operations connecting with Norfolk Southern Railway at Leaman Place Junction

The railroad also plays a key role in preserving rail history, contributing expertise to restoration projects across the country.

The Core Excursion Experience

At the heart of the Strasburg Rail Road is its standard steam train excursion, a 45-minute round trip from Strasburg to Paradise, Pennsylvania, and back.

Pulled by authentic steam locomotives, the train travels through more than 2,500 acres of farmland, much of it still worked by Amish farmers.

Passengers can choose from several seating options:

• Coach Class: Traditional wooden or upholstered seating
• Open-Air Cars: Popular during warmer months for unobstructed views
• First Class: Parlor-style seating with enhanced comfort
