The new trains will operate on the route between Zermatt to the Gornergrat – a line renowned for its unique view of the Matterhorn.
Both companies have been working together since 2019, when GGB ordered five rack-and-pinion trains from Stadler. Since then, the Railway ordered an additional vehicle in 2024, and has now commissioned Stadler to build four further trains, with delivery slated for early April 2026.
The new vehicles will form part of a wider fleet modernisation programme planned for the GGB, with each vehicle being built specifically for the demanding conditions of both the high-alpine environment and the route from Zermatt to the Gornergrat.
Dennis Laubbacher, CEO of Stadler Bussnang, said:
The Gornergrat Railway operates one of the most spectacular and famous railway lines in the world.
We are proud that our trains travel through this unique Alpine landscape every day, offering passengers an unforgettable experience. This repeat order is a strong sign of confidence in our rolling stock and our expertise in the field of rack-and-pinion railways.
The trains feature low-floor access and full accessibility, and will be manufactured at the Stadler plant in Bussnang (TG). Whilst delivery is scheduled for autumn 2028, the vehicles are set to enter service from winter 2028.
