Four days after one of the deadliest train disasters in Spain, more details are emerging, but the cause is still unclear. Investigators zero in on a potential rail defect, while train drivers call for urgent safety reforms, stating drivers are ‘risking their lives’. Transport Minister Puente, meanwhile, stresses that serious or significant accidents have fallen by more than 10% despite the number of passengers increasing by more than 15% since 2018, and that investment in track maintenance has grown by more than 50%.
