Siemens Mobility has delivered its 100th Vectron locomotive to Polish rail transport companies and operators. The milestone locomotive, named “Aleksander,” has joined the fleet of CARGOUNIT, one of the leading providers of locomotive leasing services in Central and Eastern Europe.

The delivery is part of a major framework agreement signed in 2024 between Siemens Mobility and CARGOUNIT and marks a new milestone for the Vectron platform in the Polish market. According to Siemens Mobility, Vectron is currently one of the most widely used multi-system locomotive platforms by operators in Poland.

The “Aleksander” locomotive joins the CARGOUNIT fleet

The anniversary locomotive is the 52nd Siemens locomotive operated by CARGOUNIT. The company is a major player in the region’s rolling stock market, offering a model for leasing and managing locomotives for rail operators.

For Siemens Mobility, the delivery confirms the growing demand for interoperable locomotives capable of operating in multiple European countries. These features are particularly important for international rail freight transport, where operators need rolling stock that can cross borders without changing locomotives.

“The delivery of the 100th Vectron locomotive to Polish operators is a very special moment for us. It is not only a symbol of the scale the Vectron platform has reached in Poland, but, above all, a testament to the great trust placed in us by partners such as CARGOUNIT. For years, we have been developing this cooperation based on a partnership approach, shared business goals, and a long-term vision for the development of rail transport in Poland and Europe,” said Tomasz Prejs, CEO of Siemens Mobility in Poland.

CARGOUNIT owns nearly every second Vectron locomotive in Poland

CARGOUNIT states that nearly every second Vectron locomotive operated by Polish carriers is owned by the company. This highlights the increasingly important role of rolling stock pools in the rail market, especially for operators who need flexibility in accessing modern locomotives.

“The 100th Vectron locomotive operated by Polish carriers and joining our fleet perfectly sums up several years of intense and highly effective cooperation with Siemens Mobility. Today, nearly every second Vectron locomotive operated by Polish carriers is owned by CARGOUNIT. We focus on trusted partners who offer not only modern rolling stock but also comprehensive support throughout the vehicle’s entire lifecycle. This approach allows us to dynamically expand our offering for customers in Poland and on European markets,” said Łukasz Boroń, CEO of CARGOUNIT.

Vectron, a key platform for international transport

Vectron multi-system locomotives are widely used in international transport due to their ability to operate in multiple European countries. Siemens Mobility emphasizes that, in Poland, these locomotives have become one of the preferred solutions for both freight and passenger transport.

The platform is used by operators such as PKP Intercity, PKP Cargo, DB Cargo Polska, Orlen Kolej, Laude Smart Intermodal, and CARGOUNIT. In total, Polish operators have purchased over 170 Siemens electric locomotives to date.

Across Europe, the Vectron family has reached nearly 3,000 locomotives ordered by 115 rail operators. The vehicles are authorized for operation in 20 countries and have collectively traveled over 1.35 billion kilometers.
