A Russian drone attack on a Kharkiv regional electric train on Tuesday morning has left one passenger dead and two injured. The strike occurred on 24 March around 05:20. 

The drone struck the last carriage of a suburban train travelling from Slatyne to Kharkiv. According to the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a 61-year-old passenger died instantly, while the train driver and assistant suffered acute stress reactions. All emergency services arrived at the scene. According to preliminary information, the Russian army used an FPV drone to strike, which hit a train car that was at the Slatyne station at that time.

Classified as war crime

A pre-trial investigation has been launched under the Dergachi District Prosecutor’s Office. The case has been classified as a war crime that caused the death of a person (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The Ukrainian Ministry of Community and Territorial Development confirmed the attack in a Telegram post, stating: “We express our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.”

The ministry noted that this was the latest in a series of Russian attacks on Ukrainian railways in the Kharkiv region. This includes a strike killing 5 people on a train in January and a strike on multiple trains at a train station in October last year, killing one and injuring at least 30 people.
