NJ TRANSIT has confirmed progress on a long-term fleet renewal programme valued at approximately 3 billion USD, alongside preparations to support transport demand during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
At an event held in Kearny, officials from state and federal government joined transport leaders to mark the arrival of the first Multilevel III rail carriage. The vehicle is part of an order for 374 cars intended to replace older rolling stock and increase capacity across the network.

The new Multilevel III units, manufactured by Alstom in Plattsburgh, New York, are expected to undergo several months of testing before entering passenger service. Up to 40 vehicles could be introduced later this year. The trains are designed to operate for longer periods between mechanical issues, while also offering higher speeds, increased seating and improved accessibility. The carriages can run either as single-powered units or as part of longer formations.
In addition to rail investment, the agency is introducing new 40-foot buses equipped with safety features such as camera systems and turn alerts. Updated Access Link paratransit vehicles are also being deployed, with changes aimed at improving boarding times and accessibility for passengers with mobility needs.

Earlier in 2026, NJ TRANSIT also introduced the first refurbished vehicle for the River LINE light rail service. A total of 14 vehicles are scheduled for overhaul as part of ongoing maintenance and service improvement efforts.
The agency is also preparing for increased passenger numbers linked to matches at MetLife Stadium during the 2026 FIFA tournament. More than 78,000 spectators are expected to attend each of the eight fixtures hosted at the venue.
A regional mobility plan has been developed to manage travel demand during the event. The strategy focuses on maintaining regular services for daily commuters while providing additional information and guidance for visitors. NJ TRANSIT has launched an online resource outlining travel arrangements and expected conditions on match days.
