Renfe Ingeniería y Mantenimiento and Mitsubishi Electric Europe have signed a strategic collaboration agreement under which the Villaverde maintenance facility located in Madrid will become a European reference centre for the maintenance of train traction motors, not only for vehicles of the Renfe Group but also for international clients of Mitsubishi Electric Europe.

The agreement is valid for two years, with the possibility of extension by mutual consent.
This alliance will enable both companies to provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for train traction motors across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.
The agreement also includes specialised training for the staff of Renfe Ingeniería y Mantenimiento who will deliver these services. To this end, Mitsubishi will provide Renfe with its expertise and working methods and commit to offering the necessary training to ensure that Renfe personnel are qualified to carry out maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities.
Training will be delivered by personnel designated by Mitsubishi Electric Europe and will take place at the Villaverde maintenance depot.
In addition, Mitsubishi will define, for each piece of equipment, the repair instructions, production methods, tools, equipment, and spare parts required, along with the corresponding quality checks. Renfe, on its part, will provide the industrial capacity necessary to carry out maintenance, repair, and overhaul services.
The first project to be undertaken this year will be the heavy maintenance of traction motors for the Serie 449 trains – electric multiple units built by CAF.
EUR 1 billion to modernise maintenance facilities
With over 3,000 employees, Renfe Ingeniería y Mantenimiento is the Renfe Group company specialised in rolling stock maintenance, with industrial capabilities designed to ensure the reliability, safety, and availability of trains.
The company operates a total of 94 centres across Spain, including first-level workshops (for rapid and simple interventions), second-level workshops (for complex interventions requiring train immobilisation), and specialised component repair centres. Each year, around 1,000 trains pass through these centres, with approximately 300 heavy maintenance interventions carried out.
Renfe is transforming its maintenance model through a historic investment exceeding EUR 1 billion, announced by the Ministry of Transport in October 2025. This is part of an ambitious strategic programme, the Comprehensive Workshop and Maintenance Plan 2025–2030, aimed primarily at modernising, digitising, and expanding the company’s maintenance facilities, thereby improving the quality of rail services.
Specifically, the plan includes an investment of EUR 420 million in workshops already under construction or in the project design phase, with up to an additional EUR 490 million currently under study. A further EUR 295.6 million is allocated to the Industrial Facilities Improvement Plan, of which 25% of the planned actions have already been completed.
