Lesser Poland Voivodeship, and Koleje Małopolskie, the regional railway operator in southern Poland, ordered seven Newag Impus EMUs type 45WE.

The contract is worth PLN 382.6 million (EUR 90.7 million), and delivery of the vehicles covered by the contract is scheduled for 2028–2029.

The new trains are notable for their high level of comfort, modern design, and solutions that improve accessibility for people with reduced mobility. The electric trains will have a capacity of up to 550 passengers and will be equipped, among other things, with facilities for people with disabilities, families with children, seniors, as well as passengers traveling with bicycles or bulky luggage. A new feature is the creation of a dedicated family area and the installation of modern ticket machines.

This is the third contract, signed on January 21, and is based on a framework agreement signed in September 2024 for the delivery of 25 trains with a cumulative value of over PLN 1.3 billion (EUR 308.3 million).

The framework agreement provided for the possibility of purchasing up to 25 multiple units, and to date, the Marshal’s Office of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship has ordered a total of 19 vehicles through three contracts: two contracts for six multiple units each and a this third for seven multiple units. The order is part of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship’s strategy to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly rail transport.

The trains will be used to operate the rapid metropolitan railway service (Szybka Kolej Aglomeracyjna – SKA) services in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship and neighboring regions, including by increasing the frequency of service on the SKA1 Wieliczka Rynek Kopalnia – Krakow Airport line, as well as by serving new planned routes, once completed, such as Krakow – Myślenice.

The new Newag Impuls EMUS will be used to operate regional rail services in Lesser Poland, contributing to the improvement of public transport quality in the region. The signing of this new contract confirms the consistent approach of the authorities of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship towards the development of modern, accessible, and efficient rail transport in the region.

The purchase of the new trains will be financed from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment 2021–2027 (FEnIKS) programme.
