Knorr-Bremse has been commissioned by Alstom to equip up to 90 of its new Adessia Stream trains with braking and air conditioning systems, as well as automatic front couplings.

Destined for use by public transport operators Rhine-Ruhr and go.Rheinland; the 90 new trains are set to enter a trial phase in summer 2029, and are expected to strengthen rail offerings in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region.

The trains are made up of a mix of 150- and 170-metre-long vehicles, and will feature Knorr-Bremse’s automatic AutoLink front and RescueLink adapter couplings. The deal marks the first time that the company has supplied such technology to Alstom, all of which has been manufactured at its technology site in Budapest.

Knorr-Bremse will also supply maintenance-optimised braking technology with its CubeControl system, which utilises the AirSupply air treatment solution to provide compressed air as and when it is required whilst compact brake caliper units, magnetic track brakes and sanding systems aim to further increase precision and performance.

Finally, the company will provide integrated air conditioning systems for both passenger compartments and driver’s cabs using natural refrigerant propane.

Dr. Nicolas Lange, Member of the Executive Board of Knorr-Bremse AG and globally responsible for the Rail Division, said:

Attractive rail transport is key to the mobility of tomorrow, as current public investment initiatives underscore.

We have long been shaping this future with system technology that sets standards. The fact that our partner Alstom is once again relying on our braking expertise and integrating our coupling systems for the first time confirms our technology and growth strategy.

The suburban trains for the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region meet the highest demands on quality, performance, and comfort – areas in which our efficient, reliable systems play to their strengths.

Tailor-made for the Rhineland and Ruhr region; the new Adessia Stream suburban trains have been specifically designed for high passenger volumes across a mix of urban and regional environments. The units offer flexible interiors, barrier-free areas and modern information systems.
