Published: March 26, 2026

By: Adam Burns

When one thinks of Kentucky, the mind often wanders to rolling hills, horse farms, and the historic echoes of the Kentucky Derby.

However, nestled within the Bluegrass State’s picturesque landscapes is a unique experience that marries the elegance of tea traditions with the nostalgia of classic train travel: tea train rides. This delightful pastime allows passengers to enjoy majestic views of Kentucky’s countryside while indulging in the timeless ritual of afternoon tea.

A Day on the Tea Train

Embarking on a tea train ride is an adventure in its own right. Guests are greeted by the vintage charm of restored railcars, each painstakingly refurbished to mirror a bygone era of travel luxury. As the train sets rolling, settled comfortably in plush seating with panoramic windows, passengers are enveloped in a serene atmosphere that is as much about the journey as the destination.

The tea service usually features a variety of fine teas served along with an assortment of scones, pastries, and finger sandwiches. These offerings not only cater to classic tastes but often incorporate local flavors — whether it’s a mint-infused tea nodding to the state’s famous julep or pastries made from regional produce.

My Old Kentucky Dinner Train

The My Old Kentucky Dinner Train based in Bardstown and operated by freight carrier RJ Corman is currently the only location in the state hosting a tea train experience.  Their “Princess Tea Party” excursion is a unique twist on the concept, featuring six different famous princesses along with various teas, appetizers, and desserts.

The journey on the dinner train covers a 37-mile round trip through picturesque landscapes, including rolling hills, lush forests, and historic distilleries, providing an idyllic backdrop for any occasion. Each dining car is elegantly designed, preserving the vintage feel while ensuring modern comfort and convenience.

Guests aboard the My Old Kentucky Dinner Train enjoy a four-course meal, meticulously prepared by experienced chefs. The menu often changes, reflecting seasonal ingredients and culinary trends, but always maintains a focus on Southern hospitality and flavors, featuring dishes like bourbon-glazed chicken and prime rib. A selection of fine wines and locally inspired cocktails complements the exquisite menu.

In addition to regular dining excursions, the train offers themed events throughout the year, adding a layer of entertainment and interaction to the experience. These events might include train robberies, murder mystery dinners, and holiday-themed outings, providing plenty of excitement for passengers.
