TRI Train Rental has announced that the historic Deutsche Bundesbahn high-speed locomotive 103 222 will join its fleet following a successful collaboration with RailAdventure and financial support from SRI Rail Invest.
The acquisition marks an important step in preserving and maintaining classic German electric locomotives. 103 222, previously owned by RailAdventure, had been withdrawn from service approximately two years ago after its inspection period expired but remains technically complete and largely free of major defects.
Krauss-Maffei 103 222, history in brief:
- Works number: 19635 / 1973
- Axle configuration: Co’Co’ (electric) / 1435 mm
- 1973: Delivered to DB – Deutsche Bundesbahn as 103 222-6
- 1989: Rebuilt; equipped with 280 km/h high-speed equipment – Renumbered 750 003-6;
- 1997: Sold to FTZ – Forschungs- und Technologiezentrum, Minden;
- 2002: Transferred to DB Systemtechnik, Minden;
- 2005: Renumbered back to 103 222-6;
- 2014: Withdrawn and sold to RailAdventure;
- 2026: Sold to TRI Train Rental
As part of the agreement, RailAdventure will retain the right to operate the locomotive on selected occasions after its overhaul. The locomotive is scheduled to be transferred to Mukran (Rügen), where Baltic Port Services (BPS) will carry out the revision work. Once there, it will join two other Class 103 locomotives—103 224 and 103 132—currently undergoing restoration.

The project is expected to provide valuable technical insights for the planned refurbishment of 103 224, which has been stored for over two decades. In addition, locomotive 103 132 will receive a cosmetic restoration before returning to the Nuremberg Transport Museum in its classic red-beige livery.
TRI Train Rental has also confirmed that locomotive 103 222 will receive a new and distinctive paint scheme, the details of which will be revealed at a later stage.
