Renfe has launched a EUR 43 million tender for the construction of a maintenance facility near Madrid, specifically in Móstoles, within the metropolitan area of the Spanish capital.
The new facility is being built as part of the modernization plan for Line C-5 of the suburban rail network, Cercanías Madrid. It will serve the high-capacity trains manufactured by Stadler Rail, which require adaptation of the existing infrastructure.
The maintenance depot in Móstoles-El Soto has a budget of EUR 42.7 million and an 18-month construction period.
The facility will play a key role in the operation of Line C-5, as it is designed to service the new Stadler trains, which will be gradually introduced into service. This investment is part of the comprehensive modernisation process for the line.
The new maintenance facility near Madrid area will help increase train storage and maintenance capacity, as well as reduce turnaround times, leading to more efficient operations and greater rolling stock availability on one of the busiest lines in the network.
From a technical standpoint, it will include three indoor maintenance tracks, each 200 meters long, as well as an annex building for offices and auxiliary services. Outside, there will be three tracks equipped with technical platforms, a washing line, and another equipped with a lathe for wheel maintenance.
Later this year, the first units of the new trains manufactured by Stadler Rail, the 453 series, will begin to be delivered to Madrid. These stand out for their high level of reliability, a capacity of over 500 passengers, full accessibility, and improved spaces for transporting bicycles.
EUR 1 billion for maintenance facilities
With the construction of the maintenance facility near Madrid, Renfe is taking a new step in renewing its network of workshops. This will be integrated into the 2025–2030 Comprehensive Workshop and Maintenance Plan, through which the company is adapting its infrastructure to the new requirements of rail services.
Renfe’s investment programme for the 2025–2030 period exceeds EUR 1 billion and includes the construction of new workshops, as well as the modernisation of existing ones, as part of the renewal of the train fleet for public services under the plan for the Madrid suburban network.
At the same time, the operator is implementing a new technology-based maintenance model. Real-time monitoring systems, automated track inspections, and digital tools enable the anticipation of faults, process optimisation, and reduced response times.
C-5 commuter line meets mobility demands
Line C-5 of the Cercanías Madrid network is currently one of the most heavily used railway lines in all of Spain. With demand reaching approximately 72 million passengers annually, it accounts for nearly 40% of all trips on the Madrid suburban network.
The modernisation of Line C-5 is supported by a comprehensive investment plan worth EUR 1.35 billion. This includes 28 projects aimed at optimising and modernizing both the infrastructure and the rolling stock. Funding is split between Adif, which manages approximately EUR 650 million for infrastructure, and Renfe, responsible for investments of about EUR 700 million in trains and operations. To minimise the impact of construction on passengers, alternative transport solutions are also planned, to be implemented alongside the railway projects.
