The “Sweet Monster Train,” based on a design by 8-year-old Phileine from Zutphen, was unveiled on Match 24, 2026 at Utrecht Maliebaan station. Her drawing was selected from over 1,200 entries in a nationwide Dutch Railways (NS) competition. During a festive ceremony, Phileine saw her creation arrive for the first time and officially opened the train alongside NS executive Daan Schut. Developed with illustrator Jip Piet, the colorful design will now operate as an intercity service across the Netherlands, aiming to inspire children to enjoy train travel (and bring attention to the “Kids Vrij” travel card).
