Few steam locomotives in Canada achieved the fame and longevity of Canadian National 4-8-4 No. 6218, a powerful “Confederation” type engine that bridged the gap between the steam era and the age of preservation. Built during the height of World War II and later reborn as one of the most celebrated excursion locomotives in North America, No. 6218 stands today as a symbol of both industrial might and the enduring appeal of steam railroading.

No. 6218 was constructed in September 1942 by the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW), part of a large class of modern 4-8-4 locomotives built for the Canadian National Railway.
These locomotives, classified as U-2-g, were among the most advanced steam designs in Canada. Known as “Confederations” (or “Northerns” in U.S. terminology), they represented the pinnacle of steam locomotive development—combining speed, power, and efficiency.
Designed for heavy mainline passenger service, No. 6218 featured:
- Large 71-inch driving wheels for speed
- High boiler pressure (250 psi) for sustained power
- Modern superheating and efficient combustion
- Walschaerts valve gear for reliability
The locomotive was built during a time when railroads were essential to wartime logistics, and engines like 6218 helped move troops, materials, and passengers across Canada’s vast distances.
CN Career
Upon entering service, No. 6218 quickly became part of CN’s premier passenger fleet. It operated on major routes stretching:
-
From Montreal to Halifax in the east
To Winnipeg and the Prairie provinces in the west
Into the United States via White River Junction, Vermont
These assignments placed the locomotive at the heart of CN’s transcontinental system, hauling fast passenger trains, mail, and express traffic.
As diesel locomotives began replacing steam in the 1950s, 6218—like many of its contemporaries—was reassigned to secondary duties, including freight service. Eventually, the march of dieselization rendered it obsolete, and the locomotive was retired from revenue service around 1959–1960. At that time, most steam locomotives faced scrapping. However, No. 6218’s story was far from over.

In a remarkable turn of events, Canadian National selected No. 6218 for its emerging steam excursion program in the early 1960s. The locomotive underwent a major overhaul at CN’s Stratford, Ontario shops, becoming the last steam engine refurbished at that facility.
Re-entering service in 1964, No. 6218 quickly became the centerpiece of CN’s public relations and fantrip operations.
Early Excursions
Its first runs included fall foliage excursions sponsored by the Canadian Railroad Historical Association (CRHA). These trips were immediately popular, drawing rail enthusiasts eager to witness mainline steam one last time.
A Continental Star
Over the next seven years, No. 6218 operated extensively across eastern Canada and into the United States. Highlights included:
- Regular excursions in Ontario and Quebec
- Cross-border trips into the U.S. Midwest
- A notable 1968 excursion between Chicago and South Bend
The locomotive became one of the most photographed engines of its era, symbolizing the twilight of steam in North America.
“Countdown 6218”
By the late 1960s, maintaining steam locomotives had become increasingly expensive and difficult. CN launched a farewell campaign known as “Countdown 6218” in 1970–1971, celebrating the end of its steam excursion program.
The locomotive’s final runs occurred on July 3–4, 1971, marking the end of CN’s steam operations.
During its excursion career, No. 6218:
- Operated for approximately 6½ years
- Completed over 90 excursion trips
- Carried more than 50,000 passengers
It was also notable as the last coal-fired steam locomotive to haul passengers on Canadian National.
Preservation and Current Status
Following its final retirement in 1971, No. 6218 avoided scrapping and was instead preserved. In 1972–1973, the locomotive was donated to the Fort Erie Railway Museum in Ontario, where it remains today.
Over the years, there have been discussions about restoring the locomotive to operating condition. However, the high cost of restoration and logistical challenges have kept it in static display.
Today, No. 6218 stands as:
- A centerpiece of the Fort Erie Railway Museum
- One of only a handful of preserved CN “Confederation” locomotives
- A powerful reminder of Canada’s steam heritage
Despite its inactive status, the locomotive continues to attract railfans and historians, preserving the legacy of CN’s steam era for future generations.

Legacy
Canadian National No. 6218 occupies a unique place in North American railroad history. It was not only a product of wartime necessity and engineering excellence but also a bridge between eras—linking the age of steam with the modern preservation movement.
Its excursion career helped ignite widespread interest in railroad heritage during the 1960s and 1970s, paving the way for the preservation of other historic locomotives. Today, while silent, No. 6218 remains one of the most important surviving Canadian steam locomotives—an enduring testament to the power, elegance, and cultural significance of the steam locomotive in Canada.
