Alstom and Mazovia Railways (Koleje Mazowieckie) have signed a contract for major repairs on 11 Traxx locomotives.

The work will take place between 2026 and 2027, with each locomotive covered by a 19-month warranty following final acceptance.

The contract is worth over 96 million zlotys (22 million EUR) and aims to fully modernize the Traxx locomotive fleet to ensure reliable long-term operation.

P5-type work includes detailed inspections, diagnostics, and repairs of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components, in accordance with technical and maintenance documentation. In addition, the bodywork and paintwork will be refurbished, and the bogies will undergo non-destructive testing (ultrasonic and magnetic particle), including axle reconditioning.

The services will be supported by Alstom’s FlexCare Perform solutions, designed to increase the availability and performance of Traxx locomotives. These vehicles are recognized for their energy efficiency, reliability, and operational flexibility, being built on a modular platform used for both passenger and freight transport, including international services.

According to Alstom representatives, the project contributes to strengthening the position of Traxx locomotives in the Polish market, where over 100 units are already in operation, and another 60+ are currently being delivered. At the same time, the production of key components, including car bodies, takes place in Wrocław, highlighting Poland’s role in the European industrial chain.

Repairs to the Traxx locomotives will directly contribute to increased passenger safety and comfort, as well as to the efficiency of services on high-traffic lines.

Mazovia Railways, a major regional operator

Mazovia Railways operates in central-eastern Poland, including the Warsaw metropolitan area, and is one of the country’s largest regional rail operators. The operator has transported over 70 million passengers in a single year and is continuing its modernization strategy through both the acquisition of new rolling stock and the refurbishment of its existing fleet. Currently, the company ranks third in terms of passenger numbers, operating an average of over 880 trains daily.

Between 2023 and 2025, the operator signed contracts to purchase 101 rail vehicles of various types, including 75 Flirt electric trains from Stadler, 10 diesel multiple units, and 16 EMUs from Pesa, all with a total value of over 6 billion zlotys (1.4 billion EUR).

“We are also focusing on modernizing those already in service, including the Traxx locomotives. Thanks to them, we were the first carrier in the country to launch push-pull trains. Locomotives play a key role in ensuring fast connections on lines with high passenger volumes,” said Robert Stępień, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Koleje Mazowieckie.

The operator was established in 2004 and is 51% owned by the Mazovia Voivodeship Government and 49% by PKP Przewozy Regionalne (Polish Regional Railways).
