Alstom has signed a contract worth more than €22 million to carry out major overhauls on 11 Traxx electric locomotives for Mazovian Railways, Poland’s largest regional passenger operator, which runs services across the Mazovian province including the Warsaw metropolitan area.

The work, scheduled for 2026–2027, will see each Traxx locomotive undergo a full P5 overhaul, the highest level of scheduled maintenance involving deep inspection and renewal of core systems, with each unit covered by a 19-month warranty following acceptance by the operator.

The programme forms part of a broader push from Mazovian Railways to modernise its existing fleet alongside ongoing rolling stock acquisitions, with the company signing off on an expanded new fleet of Stadler FLIRT units last year.

Major overhaul

The P5 overhaul represents the most comprehensive scheduled maintenance level for locomotives, involving full inspection and renewal of key systems. In this case, Alstom will carry out detailed diagnostics and repairs across mechanical, electrical and pneumatic components.

The scope also includes repainting the locomotive bodies, as well as extensive work on bogies and running gear. This includes non-destructive testing of bogie components using ultrasonic (UT) and magnetic particle (MT) methods to detect cracks and other hidden defects without damaging the parts themselves, alongside overhauls of the wheelsets.

“We are pleased that in the coming quarters we will be supporting Mazovian Railways in modernising its fleet, enabling Traxx locomotives to reliably serve the regional operator, which has been breaking passenger transport records, for many years to come,” said Beata Rusinowicz, Managing Director of Alstom in Poland.

Traxx’s special place in Poland

Mazovian Railways carried more than 70 million passengers last year, a record for the operator, and signed contracts for the purchase of 101 vehicles between 2023 and 2025. Its Traxx locomotives, which entered service in 2011 and enabled the operator to launch push-pull services, continue to play what Mazovian Railways CEO Robert Stępień described as “a key role in operating accelerated services on lines with high passenger volumes.”

More than 100 Traxx locomotives are currently in operation in Poland, with further growth expected as more than 60 Traxx Universal units are already on order. The platform, designed as a modular solution for both passenger and freight operations, is used across domestic and cross-border services in AC, DC and multi-system configurations.

“We proudly observe the growing position of Traxx locomotives on the Polish market as one of the pillars of safe, reliable and cost-effective railways, both in passenger and freight transport,” said Rusinowicz. “In Alstom’s Polish sites, we are continuously developing the value chain related to the production and maintenance of Traxx locomotives, from manufacturing key components to consistently strengthening service capabilities.”

Alstom pointed to its Wrocław facility as a key manufacturing hub for Traxx components, including car bodies, as Poland becomes more central to the company’s wider industrial production and maintenance chain.
