Alstom has announced delivery of the first two of eight new trains to the Oficina para el Reordenamiento del Transporte (OPRET) for the Santo Domingo Metro Line 2 expansion project.

The project, which will see an extension of the Santo Domingo Metro to Los Alcarrizos, will utilise eight three-car Metropolis trains designed, manufactured and delivered by Alstom.

Manufactured at the company’s facility in Santa Perpétua, Barcelona; the trains form part of a wider strategy to both modernise and expand the Dominican capital’s mass transit network.

Maite Ramos, Managing Director of Alstom for North Latin America, said:

The delivery of the first trains for the extension of Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro is a key milestone for Alstom and for urban mobility in the country.

This project reflects our long-term commitment to the Dominican Republic and to the development of modern, safe, and sustainable transportation solutions, in close collaboration with OPRET.

Alstom is now currently preparing the remaining units, with all trains shipped from Spain to the Dominican Republic as three individual cars each before being linked together and made to undergo a number of final inspections before delivery. They are then integrated into the system, including final testing within the Santo Domingo Metro environment.

With the remaining trains expected to be delivered over the coming months, the recently supplied units will now be integrated into the Santo Domingo Metro, beginning their own robust testing regime on the network itself, including the validation of key systems in real-world operating conditions – such as the introduction of a new generation of braking systems.

The new Metropolis trains are hoped to provide better amenities for both passengers and train operations with wider doors, open gangways, advanced passenger information systems, LED lighting and driver’s cabs equipped with a wide range of technology.

All trains can also operate in a multiple-unit configuration, which allows system capacity to be increased in line with demand. Currently, Alstom is working to strengthen operational compatibility between different train series, with a wider aim of optimising commercial operations.
