PKP Intercity has exercised the option provided for in the contract signed in January 2024 with the Polish manufacturer Newag for the delivery of Griffin 200 multi-system electric locomotives.
The rail operator is thus expanding its order by a further 32 locomotives, and once all deliveries have been completed, PKP Intercity’s fleet will comprise 110 locomotives from this series.
The option forms part of the contract signed in 2024 for the purchase of 63 multi-system electric locomotives, with the option to order a further 32 units and with maintenance services included.
The value of the 32 additional locomotives amounts to EUR 181.6 million (PLN 775.3 million), excluding VAT. PKP Intercity states that this figure may change following any future updates to the delivery price.
Under the agreement, upon receipt of the notification, Newag has 14 working days to submit a detailed schedule for the additional deliveries.
Deliveries under the main contract, for the 63 locomotives, are proceeding according to the agreed schedule. To date, PKP Intercity has received 12 units, and by the end of 2026 the Griffin 200 locomotive fleet is set to reach 20 vehicles.
The entire main contract will be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2028.
Griffin 200 locomotives for international routes
All additional locomotives will be technically identical to those delivered under the initial contract. The vehicles will be built to the original technical specifications, with no design modifications.
The Griffin 200 is a modern multi-system electric locomotive with a top speed of 200 km/h. One of the main advantages of these locomotives is their ability to operate on three different power supply systems: 3 kV DC (used in Poland), 15 kV AC (used in Germany, Austria, Sweden and Norway), and 25 kV AC (used in France, the UK, Spain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary).
Thanks to this multi-system capability, the locomotives will be able to operate not only on the Polish rail network but also on European rail infrastructure, once the necessary approvals have been obtained in each country.
In Poland, the Griffin 200 locomotives will be used on some of PKP Intercity’s most important routes, including connections between Warsaw and Gdynia, Poznań, Wrocław, Katowice and Kraków.
The authorisation process for the EU200 locomotives to operate on foreign rail networks is progressing according to plan. Newag has already completed the type-approval tests and submitted applications to extend the authorisations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The first commercial services of the Griffin 200 locomotives in the Czech Republic are scheduled for December 2026. The type-approval process for Germany and Austria is still ongoing.
Once all procedures have been completed, the locomotives will be able to operate direct international trains from Poland to the main capitals and cities of Central Europe.
