Eurotunnel has launched the first phase of a project to modernise rail signalling in the Channel Tunnel, working with Compagnie des Signaux – CSEE, part of the MERMEC Group.

The project forms part of a wider programme to update the Channel Tunnel’s signalling system and improve interoperability with newer generations of trains. Eurotunnel will introduce the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), which is designed to support safer and more efficient rail operations and to align the tunnel with European rail standards.

The initial phase focuses on fitting on-board signalling equipment to the 57 Brush locomotives used on LeShuttle freight and passenger services between Folkestone and Coquelles. The system includes the European Train Control System (ETCS), which enables continuous communication between trains and trackside infrastructure.

Didier Cazelles, Chief Executive Officer of Eurotunnel said:

With this partnership, we are taking an essential step in the modernisation of our infrastructure and reinforcing our commitment to ever safer, more efficient and interoperable rail operations. This project forms part of Eurotunnel’s mission to connect Europe by harnessing the best technologies to optimise the accessibility of our infrastructure.

Compagnie des Signaux has been selected to deliver a dual ERTMS/TVM solution, allowing locomotives to operate during the transition from the existing TVM signalling system to ETCS.

The dual-standard approach is intended to limit service disruption and reduce locomotive downtime while the migration is carried out. Later phases of the programme will address upgrades to the ground infrastructure so that it can support full communication with the new on-board systems.

Gilles Pascault, President of Compagnie des Signaux said:

We are proud to continue more than 30 years of successful collaboration with Eurotunnel. This new signalling modernisation project illustrates renewed confidence in our expertise and our ability to support Eurotunnel in its technical and operational challenges. Our dual-standard ERTMS/TVM solution has been designed to guarantee safety, performance, and availability, while facilitating the transition to European standards. Compagnie des Signaux also relies on the recognised expertise of the MERMEC group in integrating signalling systems on fleets of locomotives in operation.

The project supports Eurotunnel’s long-term operational strategy and preparations for future rail traffic through the Channel Tunnel, which connects the UK and France and carries passenger and freight services throughout the year.
