ÖBB and Stadler presented the first new-generation Cityjet double-decker train in Vienna, designed for regional transport in Austria. The train made its maiden run from Vienna Central Station to Wiener Neustadt, marking the start of the introduction of a new fleet of local trains with greater capacity and enhanced comfort.
The Austrian rail operator is investing approximately EUR 1.5 billion in 109 Cityjet double-decker trains manufactured by Stadler. The first units will enter commercial service at the end of June, initially on the Vienna Floridsdorf – Payerbach/Reichenau route.
By the end of 2026, ÖBB plans to have 45 trains in operation in eastern Austria.
New trains for commuters in the Vienna area
The new trains will be used primarily in Vienna and Lower Austria, on one of the country’s most important commuter routes. The first route targeted is CJX 9, from Vienna to Wiener Neustadt and Payerbach-Reichenau.
Subsequently, the main area of operation will be the north-south corridor, including REX services from Znojmo/Retz, via Nordwestbahn, and from Břeclav/Bernhardsthal, via Vienna, to Wiener Neustadt and Payerbach-Reichenau.
Andreas Matthä, CEO of ÖBB, stated that the operator is continuing to invest in increasing capacity and comfort in local transport.
“We continue to invest in greater comfort and increased capacity in local rail services. In total, we will have 109 new Cityjet double-decker trains from Stadler in operation in Lower Austria and Vienna. The eastern region has a high volume of rail passengers; here we provide approximately two-thirds of our total local services. The new Cityjet double-decker trains offer not only much more space but also greater comfort, thanks to spacious, multifunctional areas for bicycles and strollers, as well as accessible boarding and alighting areas,” said Andreas Matthä.
In his local address regarding Wiener Neustadt, the ÖBB chief emphasized that the city is better connected to Vienna than any other city in Lower Austria, and the new double-decker trains will further increase capacity on this route.
Part of ÖBB’s largest investment program
The acquisition of the Cityjet double-decker trains is part of ÖBB’s largest-ever investment program in rolling stock. The operator is allocating EUR 6.1 billion to purchase approximately 330 new trains by 2030.
Austrian Minister of Mobility Peter Hanke stated that investments in rail are essential for the transition to more sustainable transportation.
“Rail is a fundamental lever on our path toward the mobility transition. The fact that we are investing record amounts in the expansion and modernization of the Austrian rail network by 2030 is a clear commitment that we take this task very seriously. In addition, ÖBB is investing EUR 6.1 billion in the purchase of over 300 trains to offer the people of Austria modern and comfortable rail travel,” said Peter Hanke.
Peter Spuhler, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Stadler, said that the new train combines modern technology with a high level of comfort.
“This train combines state-of-the-art technology with the highest level of comfort and sets new standards in terms of energy efficiency and environmental protection. Together with ÖBB, we are not only offering passengers a comfortable journey, but also making an important contribution to sustainable mobility—in Austria and worldwide,” said Peter Spuhler.
Capacity of up to 591 seats
The new double-decker Cityjet trains will be delivered in six-car and four-car configurations. The six-car version is 160 meters long and offers approximately 591 seats, while the four-car version is approximately 105–107 meters long and offers about 371 seats.
The maximum speed is 160 km/h. The trains include multifunctional areas in each car, with space for bicycles, strollers, and luggage. The six-car sets can accommodate up to 60 bicycle spaces, and the four-car sets up to 36.
The vehicles are equipped with accessible boarding and alighting areas, a low-floor design, two dedicated spaces for wheelchair users in the middle car, and height-adjustable side tables.
Wi-Fi, USB ports, and real-time information
The interior features the Cityjet design and includes comfortable seats, automatic climate control, power outlets and USB ports at every row of seats, free Wi-Fi, and video surveillance.
The trains feature a modern passenger information system with real-time data displayed on monitors. Depending on the configuration, each train has between two and four restrooms, one of which is accessible and equipped with a changing table for infants.
