České dráhy (ČD) has launched a tender for the procurement of electric and battery-powered trains as part of preparations for the upcoming regional rail transport contract in the southern part of the Hradec Králové region. The Czech operator aims to prepare its bid for the regional contract, which is set to begin in December 2031 and run for 15 years.

According to the company, the framework tender covers up to 33 multiple units, including 20 dual-mode battery-powered trains and 13 electric trains for operation exclusively on electrified lines.

Electric and battery-powered multiple units that can run together

One of the region’s key requirements is that the two types of multiple units be able to be coupled and operated as a single unit. This would allow for the introduction of direct connections combining travel on both electrified and non-electrified lines, as well as increased capacity on the electrified sections around the regional capital.

České dráhy states that, if it wins the region’s tender for public passenger rail transport services, it will order at least 6 electric multiple units (EMUs) and 7 battery-powered multiple units (BEMUs). The remainder would be ordered later, depending on the region’s final requirements.

European funds for part of the purchase

The company says it is also considering using European funds through MODFond TRANSGov to finance part of the trains.

Both electric and battery-powered trains are expected to offer: The trains will also be equipped with modern communication and safety systems, including GSM-R and ETCS.
