Hafeet Rail announced that the railway project connecting Oman and the United Arab Emirates is 40% complete, marking one of the region’s most significant joint infrastructure, transportation, and logistics initiatives. The line will be 238 kilometers long and is designed to support both freight traffic and future passenger services between the two countries.
Hafeet Rail is a joint venture formed by Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment. The project aims to create an integrated transport and logistics system, with a focus on more efficient trade flows, more resilient supply chains, and closer economic integration between Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
Work at several key points along the route
According to the company, construction is progressing in several strategic areas along the route, including Al Ain, Al Buraimi, Sohar, and Wadi Al Jizzi.
The corridor traverses urban and industrial areas, as well as challenging terrain featuring mountains and deep valleys, requiring builders to employ complex engineering solutions. These include large-scale excavations, the construction of major bridges and tunnels, and the installation of integrated flood protection systems.
27 million cubic meters of earthworks
Data published by Hafeet Rail highlights the scale of the ongoing work: The company also notes that the progress of tunnel construction represents one of the project’s key milestones.
- over 27 million cubic meters of earthworks completed;
- more than 100,000 cubic meters of concrete work;
- 80 structures in various stages of construction;
- 900 bored piles;
- 130 precast bridges.
Ports, industrial zones, and logistics hubs
Work is also continuing at key facilities in Sohar and Al Buraimi, which are expected to play an important role in connecting ports, industrial zones, and logistics hubs to the new network.
The main objective is to develop a corridor capable of supporting the efficient cross-border movement of goods within an integrated regional network.
Signaling and control systems meeting international standards
Hafeet Rail states that the signaling, control, and communications systems implemented on this line will meet the highest international standards, ensuring safety and interoperability between the networks in Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
The company claims that these technologies will allow for shorter intervals between trains, increased operational capacity, and a higher level of automation under all operating and weather conditions.
Future passenger services
For now, the project is primarily presented as a logistics and freight initiative, but Hafeet Rail says the new line will also lay the groundwork for future passenger rail services.
These would support tourism, business mobility, and social ties between Oman and the United Arab Emirates, in line with the development goals of both countries.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
The company states that the project should contribute to economic diversification, the development of the transport and logistics sector, and a reduction in dependence on conventional road transport.
In addition, Hafeet Rail links the project to emissions reduction and stronger regional integration between the two countries.
