EUROPE: Semi-trailer by rail transport specialist CargoBeamer has expanded its routes as part of its ambitions to offer a ‘dense, high-frequency intermodal network across the Alps’.

A service transporting semi-trailers by rail between the DUSS Terminal in Kornwestheim near Stuttgart and the Malpensa intermodal terminal in the northwest of the greater Milano area launched on April 13, with SBB Cargo International providing traction. There are initially four roundtrips per week, with an increase to five planned in the medium term.

This replaces a previous connection between Kornwestheim and Domodossola, and the launch also follows the demise in December of the RAlpin ‘Rolling Highway’ piggyback service between Freiburg im Breisgau in Germany and Novara near Milano.

‘Following the highly successful launch of the Liège – Domodossola service, we are seeing strong momentum and clear demand for additional capacity in intermodal transport between southwest Germany and the greater Milano area’, said CargoBeamer COO Boris Timm. ‘Our new service addresses this need directly. With our new partner terminal Milano-Sacconago, we are excellently positioned to serve road and air freight-oriented cargo flows and continue to expand our network in northern Italy.’

Meanwhile, the Liège — Domodossola route which was launched in January has been extended to the CEPIM Terminal in Parma, serving the region’s logistics and food hubs. There are six round trips per week, with BLS Cargo providing traction.
