Czech Railways (ČD) is expanding its service offerings on the Baltic Express route for passengers traveling to the Polish Tri-City region (Gdańsk–Gdynia–Sopot).
During the summer season, night trains between Prague and Gdynia will feature a couchette car in addition to the existing sleeper car, increasing capacity by nearly 50 seats and offering a more affordable option for comfortable travel between the Czech Republic and the increasingly popular Baltic coast.
The international Ex32 Baltic Express line Prague – Pardubice – Wrocław – Gdańsk – Gdynia continues to expand its passenger services. From June 26 to August 31, 2026, a couchette car will be introduced on the EC 460 and EC 461 night trains, complementing the existing sleeper car, which operates year-round.
“The Baltic Express route has quickly gained popularity among passengers since its launch, especially during the summer season. That is why we are responding to the growing demand and adding new, attractive, and affordable services. In addition to the sleeper car, we are also introducing a couchette car for the summer season, with a higher standard than is usual for this type of service,” said Michal Krapinec, CEO of the operator ČD.
Additional Capacity on the Baltic Express Route
The couchette car will offer passengers four- or six-person compartments. Passengers will also be able to book an entire compartment, i.e., a private compartment for 1 to 3 people. In this case, it will represent an attractive alternative to sleeper cars.
The standard corresponds to the couchette cars used, for example, on routes from Prague to Przemyśl, Poland, where the beds will be made up for sleeping, and in the morning passengers will receive a light breakfast consisting of a croissant, a hot beverage (coffee or tea), and water. Onboard service is provided by JLV stewards, who offer services in the dining and sleeping cars of Czech Railways. The price for a seat in a 6-person compartment is an attractive option for passengers seeking a comfortable yet affordable overnight connection.
“In recent years, we have successfully operated the sleeper car on routes to Warsaw and Kraków, and we recently began operating it on the line to Przemyśl, where it was very well received by passengers. This has prompted us to expand the offer in a similar way on the night route between Prague and Gdynia. The sleeper car not only increases train capacity but also provides a higher level of comfort for passengers,” said Jiří Ješeta, Deputy General Manager of the Passenger Transport Division.
The EC 460 (departing from Prague Main Station) and EC 461 (departing from Gdynia Station) night trains are part of the Baltic Express route. Under this name, four EuroCity trains run in each direction, consisting of modern cars from ČD and the Polish operator PKP Intercity. The trains offer modern cars with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, the ability to charge electronic devices, and, throughout the journey, catering services in the Czech Railways bistro car.
Trains depart from Prague Main Station daily and stop in the Czech Republic at Kolín, Pardubice, Ústí nad Orlicí, Letohrad, Jablonné nad Orlicí, and Lichkov. The journey from Prague to Gdańsk takes approximately 8.5 hours, and the trip to Gdynia takes only about half an hour longer.
