Port Polska, the company responsible for the rail project for Poland’s new central airport, has launched a new tender for the construction of a 14.3-kilometer section of the Warsaw–Łódź high-speed rail line. This is the second such tender for sections of the future line, part of the “Y”-shaped main line that will connect Warsaw, Łódź, Poznań, and Wrocław.
The tender covers the section between the airport hub and the Bolimów hub and is being conducted under a competitive dialogue procedure. The deadline for submitting expressions of interest is June 12.
Trains reaching speeds of up to 350 km/h
The contract covers the detailed design and construction of high-speed railway line No. 85, on the section between the two hubs, excluding the hubs themselves.
According to the company, this section is part of the railway “Y” that will connect Poland’s main economic centers.
The line is designed for speeds of up to 350 km/h and will be built to standards allowing operation at this level, including track geometry, curve radii, switches, level crossings, anti-vibration and noise-reduction measures, as well as Poland’s new power supply standard: 25 kV alternating current.
55 infrastructure projects and 30 kilometers of track
The contract will be carried out under a “design-build” model, which means that the future contractor will prepare the construction, technical, and shop drawings based on the basic designs already provided, and then proceed with the actual construction work.
For the 14.3 kilometers of track, the following are planned:
- 55 infrastructure projects, including road and rail bridges and viaducts, footbridges, and animal crossings;
- the construction or modernization of approximately 30 kilometers of roads.
A maximum of five bidders will be selected
In the first stage, the company will collect applications from firms and consortia interested in participating in the competitive dialogue.
In the second stage, these will be evaluated based on experience in railway construction, and then no more than five potential contractors will be selected for further discussions.
Project officials say they are trying to give Polish companies a significant role.
The government representative for the central airport project, Maciej Lasek, stated that the authorities want this investment to stimulate the local economy, and for the contracts, experience, and profits to primarily strengthen the Polish construction sector.
The Warsaw–Łódź line, divided into six sections
The new announcement comes after the company opened bids last week for another tender regarding a section of Line 85, between Kotowice and the airport hub.
According to the company, the entire Warsaw–Łódź high-speed line has been divided into six sections. In addition to the two already under tender, further tenders are planned for: Furthermore, the company intends to launch two separate tenders this year for:
- 18 km between Warsaw West and Kotowice;
- 12 km within the Bolimów junction;
- 37 km between the Bolimów junction and Brzeziny;
- 11 km between Brzeziny and Łódź.
- signaling and telecommunications systems;
- the catenary system and power supply for the entire Warsaw–Łódź line.
Target: 2032 for Warsaw–Łódź
According to the official schedule, the section of Line No. 85 between Warsaw and Łódź, which will also provide a connection to the new airport, is scheduled to be put into service in 2032.
Three years later, in 2035, the complete railway “Y” is expected to enable fast connections to Poznań and Wrocław.
