NJ TRANSIT has taken delivery of the first of 374 Multilevel III rail cars from Alstom as part of its fleet modernisation programme.
The new vehicle was presented at the agency’s Meadows Maintenance Complex in Kearny on 13 April 2026.
The Multilevel III car will now undergo several months of testing and commissioning in New Jersey before entering passenger service. NJ TRANSIT expects up to 40 additional rail cars to be delivered and introduced into service later this year.

The procurement of 374 rail cars forms part of a broader investment programme valued at more than 3 billion USD, which also covers new buses, paratransit vehicles, and upgrades to light rail equipment.
NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kris Kolluri said:
The introduction of new rail cars, buses and light rail vehicles is central to strengthening the reliability our customers depend on every day. These investments are designed to deliver more consistent service while improving comfort, convenience, and accessibility across our system.
The Multilevel III rail cars are being manufactured by Alstom in Plattsburgh, New York. They offer higher mechanical reliability than older models currently in service, some of which date back to the 1970s. They also include features such as increased seating capacity, onboard information screens, USB charging ports, and improved accessibility provisions.

The new fleet will gradually replace older Arrow III and Comet-series single-level rail cars. They are designed to operate at speeds of up to 110 mph.
The first unit delivered is a powered rail car, which is capable of operating independently or as part of longer train formations when combined with other units.
Michael Keroullé, President and CEO of Alstom Americas said:
Governor Mikie Sherrill and NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri have made clear that a strong reliable rail system is the backbone of a livable, affordable New Jersey. The Multilevel III fleet delivers on that commitment, offering reliable vehicles with modern amenities, greater capacity, and a more comfortable ride for passengers. These vehicles are built in the USA by our skilled union employees whose dedication and expertise make this transformation possible.
