  5. CVSR Train Rides

Published: April 13, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) offers one of the most unique rail experiences in the United States: a scenic journey through the heart of a national park. Operating within the stunning landscapes of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the railroad provides passengers with a relaxing and historically rich way to experience northeastern Ohio’s natural beauty.

Running between the cities of Cleveland and Akron, CVSR combines heritage railroading with environmental stewardship, educational programming, and community engagement. Since its founding in the 1970s, the railroad has evolved into a premier Midwestern attraction, drawing families, rail enthusiasts, cyclists, and tourists throughout the year.

Historical Background

Early Railroading in the Cuyahoga Valley

The corridor now traversed by the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad has deep roots in 19th-century railroading. The line was originally constructed in the 1880s by the Valley Railway Company, which sought to connect the industrial centers of Cleveland and Akron while serving the region’s quarries, farms, and small communities.  By 1889 the line was acquired by the Baltimore & Ohio, which sought a direct route into Cleveland.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the route became an important freight artery and a popular passenger line, offering convenient access to the scenic countryside. Over time, however, the rise of automobiles and highways led to the decline of passenger rail service, and by the mid-20th century, such operations had ceased.

Preservation and the Birth of CVSR

Efforts to preserve the valley’s natural and cultural heritage culminated in the establishment of the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area in 1974, later redesignated as Cuyahoga Valley National Park in 2000. Recognizing the historic significance of the railroad corridor, local advocates launched an initiative to restore passenger service.

In 1975, the Cuyahoga Valley Line began operating scenic excursions, marking the rebirth of passenger rail in the valley. The organization was later renamed the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, and through partnerships with the National Park Service and the Akron Metropolitan Park District, it developed into a thriving nonprofit heritage railroad.

Route and Scenic Highlights

The CVSR operates over approximately 26 miles of track between Cleveland and Akron, with key boarding locations including:

  • Rockside Station (Independence)
  • Peninsula Depot
  • Akron Northside Station

The route follows the historic Ohio & Erie Canal corridor and parallels the Towpath Trail, offering passengers exceptional views of:

  • Brandywine Falls, one of Ohio’s most iconic waterfalls

  • The winding Cuyahoga River
  • Dense forests and wetlands teeming with wildlife
  • Historic canal-era structures and charming villages

This combination of natural beauty and historical context makes the journey one of the most scenic rail experiences in the Midwest.

Motive Power and Equipment

Passenger Equipment

The CVSR’s passenger fleet primarily consists of restored mid-20th-century railcars, many of which were originally used by major American railroads. These include:Motive Power

  • Standard Coach Cars – Comfortable seating with large windows for scenic viewing
  • Table-Top Seating – Ideal for families and groups
  • Premium and First-Class Cars – Enhanced comfort and amenities
  • Dome and Lounge Cars – Offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape

Most excursions are powered by diesel locomotives – notably several streamlined FPA-4s of Canadian National heritage – ensuring reliable year-round service. However, CVSR occasionally hosts visiting steam locomotives, which generate significant public interest. Notable guest appearances have included:

  • Nickel Plate Road 765, a celebrated 2-8-4 “Berkshire” type that has hauled numerous special excursions on the line.

These steam events are typically limited engagements and are widely regarded as highlights of the railroad’s operating seasons.

Signature and Seasonal Excursions

While CVSR operates regular scenic trains, its diverse calendar of themed and seasonal excursions is central to its appeal. Rather than listing every specific date, the following sections highlight the railroad’s most popular offerings throughout the year.

National Park Scenic Excursion

The National Park Scenic train is the railroad’s flagship experience. This flexible excursion allows passengers to board and disembark at various stations throughout the park, making it ideal for sightseeing, hiking, or simply enjoying a relaxing ride.

Key features include:

  • Narrated journeys highlighting the park’s history and ecology
  • Options for one-way or round-trip travel
  • Opportunities to explore towns such as Peninsula
  • Connections to trails and visitor centers

Bike Aboard Program

One of CVSR’s most distinctive offerings is the Bike Aboard! program, which allows cyclists to combine rail travel with outdoor recreation.

Participants can:

  • Load bicycles onto the train

  • Ride along the scenic Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail
  • Reboard the train for a relaxing return trip

This program exemplifies the railroad’s integration with the recreational mission of the national park.

Fall Flyer

The Fall Flyer is among the most popular seasonal excursions, operating during the peak autumn foliage season. Passengers are treated to vibrant displays of red, orange, and gold as the train winds through the valley.

Highlights include:

  • Extended routes through the park
  • Onboard narration
  • Premium seating options
  • Exceptional photography opportunities

Tickets for these excursions often sell out well in advance due to their popularity.

Holiday Experiences

The Polar Express™

Perhaps the most famous of CVSR’s seasonal offerings is The Polar Express™, inspired by the beloved children’s book and film. During this magical journey, families experience:

  • A reading of The Polar Express story
  • Visits from Santa Claus and his helpers
  • Hot chocolate and cookies
  • Festive music and decorations

This event typically operates from mid-November through December and is a cornerstone of the railroad’s annual programming.North Pole Adventure™

Another cherished holiday event is the North Pole Adventure™, which offers a similarly festive experience with interactive storytelling and seasonal entertainment.

Special and Themed Excursions

CVSR also hosts a variety of special events throughout the year, catering to diverse interests:

  • Ales on Rails – Featuring regional craft beers
  • Grape Escape – Wine tasting excursions
  • Murder Mystery Train – Interactive theatrical performances
  • Educational Field Trips – Designed for school groups
  • Steam Excursions – Occasional visits from historic steam locomotives

These offerings enhance the railroad’s appeal to both families and adult audiences.

Significance and Preservation

The CVSR stands out among heritage railways for several reasons:

  • Only scenic railroad operating within a U.S. national park
  • Strong partnerships with public and nonprofit organizations
  • Integration with outdoor recreation, particularly cycling and hiking
  • Commitment to education and preservation
  • Occasional mainline steam operations, enhancing its appeal to enthusiasts

Its continued success demonstrates how historic rail infrastructure can be repurposed to support conservation, tourism, and community development.  The railroad offers far more than a simple train ride—it provides an immersive journey through history, nature, and community. From its origins as a vital industrial corridor to its present role as a centerpiece of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the railroad exemplifies the enduring relevance of America’s rail heritage.

Whether enjoying the tranquil scenery of the National Park Scenic, cycling the Towpath Trail through the Bike Aboard program, marveling at autumn foliage aboard the Fall Flyer, or sharing holiday magic on The Polar Express™, passengers are treated to an unforgettable experience that celebrates both the past and the natural beauty of Ohio.

For families, history enthusiasts, and outdoor adventurers alike, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad remains one of the Midwest’s most treasured attractions—a living testament to the power of preservation and the timeless romance of rail travel.  To learn more about all of their excursion experiences please click here to visit their website.
