The MBTA on April 6 announced service information during this summer’s seven World Cup matches in June and July, including expanded Commuter Rail service and special Boston Stadium Train tickets to help fans travel across the region.

Roundtrip Boston Stadium Train tickets between South Station andBoston Stadium (Gillette Stadium) will be $80, sold exclusively on mTicket, and are good for travel on the entire Commuter Rail network on match days, allowing visitors more flexibility and options in choosing where to stay to attend World Cup matches. Tickets for the first five matches will go on sale beginning at 11 AM on Wednesday, April 8, with tickets for the Round 32 and Quarter-Final matches on sale closer to the match dates.

“The MBTA is proud to have the opportunity to enable football fans from near and far to travel the Commonwealth, and we are ready to deliver unprecedented transit services to the seven World Cup matches held at Boston Stadium. The MBTA and MassDOT are focused on ensuring that we balance and support all of the celebrations and events this summer with the needs of our daily riders and drivers that count on the transportation system 365 days a year,” said Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. “MassDOT anticipates high volumes of traffic to Boston Stadium for the upcoming matches, and traffic management will include additional roadside message signs, proactive deployment of tow trucks to quickly clear vehicles, and High Occupancy Vehicle Lane schedule adjustments between Boston and Braintree on I-93. With our service plans and pricing announced today, we encourage the public to Kick the Drive and use the MBTA’s Boston Stadium Train service instead. Taking the Commuter Rail will be one of the easiest and most affordable ways to get to and from the Stadium. I thank the Healey-Driscoll Administration and our Legislative partners for their leadership and support, our dedicated workforces for their planning and service efforts, and to our new and regular riders – thank you for choosing transit and the MBTA.”

Alstom

Alstom on April 7 announced that it has received a five-year contract extension to operate and maintain the Innovia Automated People Mover (APM) at ATL. The agreement, valued at approximately $160 million, continues a partnership that dates to the debut of the airport’s Plane Train in 1980.

The Plane Train is an integral part of the world’s busiest airport, connecting passengers easily even as the airport has grown, ensuring that traveling between terminals never takes more than a few minutes, the company noted. Alstom operates the Plane Train 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In 2025, the system set an all-time record by transporting 95 million passengers.

“For more than four decades, our partnership with the City of Atlanta has been defined by a shared commitment to delivering an exceptional passenger experience for travellers,” said Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas. “Our track record of delivering on these commitments and partnering with our customers is why Alstom has such long-standing contracts in our operations and maintenance business. Our team in Atlanta works around-the-clock, 365 days a year to support the world’s busiest airport with safe, efficient mobility solutions.”

The Plane Train runs along a 2.8-mile-long underground tunnel that connects all of the airport’s concourses and terminals. Currently, Alstom is also engaged in two capital projects at ATL: improving the system’s infrastructure and supplying 63 Innovia APM R vehicles to augment and refresh the airport’s fleet. These measures, the company says, will further boost passenger capacity by enabling more trains per hour.

The extension of the operations and maintenance contract takes effect upon signing and includes two one-year options. The agreement covers:

The extension of the contract, the company says, will allow Alstom to retain and continue to develop the nearly 140 skilled employees currently working at the site. In addition to providing high levels of service and reliability to airport passengers and employees, Alstom’s local team is also engaged in the greater Atlanta community in a number of ways, such as partnering with local food banks and participating in Toys for Tots holiday drives.

MHI

Crystal Mover Services, Inc. (CMSI), a part of MHI Group, has concluded a contract with the City of Atlanta, Department of Aviation, operator of ATL in the United States, to renovate and upgrade the airport’s APM system, ATL SkyTrain. The contract covers a ten-year period from March 2026 to March 2036.

CMSI provides operations and maintenance services for airport APM systems in the United States. Given that more than 15 years have passed since MHI Group delivered Atlanta airport’s APM system, this latest contract, the company says, includes renewal of the signal system and various other devices and equipment, as well as additional vehicles and the replacement of existing vehicles.

ATL’s APM system connects the main passenger terminal with the rental car center, with one intermediate station, extending a total length of approximately 2.2 kilometers (1.3 miles). The line comprises a wholly elevated double-tracked guideway, functioning as crucial infrastructure for the airport, which has the highest passenger traffic in the world.

Since the start of commercial operation in December 2009, CMSI has provided O&M services 24 hours a day year-round, “helping to ensure safety, reliability, and comfort,” MHI noted. In December 2024, CMSI concluded a five-year O&M service renewal agreement for the airport and continues to support the stable operation of the APM system. In addition to CMSI’s long-standing operational and maintenance track record and continuous efforts, MHI Group received this contract for renewal of the APM system equipment and facilities in recognition of its accumulated technical capabilities for the design, manufacturing, and construction of APM systems.
