At least 24 people, including four children, were injured after seven cars of a passenger train traveling from Chelyabinsk to Moscow derailed Friday morning in the Ulyanovsk region, near the Briandino station. Initial reports indicated seven injuries, but this figure was later revised by authorities.

According to available information, the train consisted of eight railcars and was carrying over 400 passengers, with some sources indicating 415 people on board. The derailment occurred at 6:26 a.m., and several cars overturned onto their sides. Passengers exited the train, including through the windows, according to reports from the first hours after the accident.

No fatalities, but fractures and contusions

Russian authorities reported that there were no fatalities. According to the governor of the Chelyabinsk region, two people suffered fractures—one to the leg and the other to the collarbone—while other passengers sustained contusions.

TASS initially reported that a child was among the injured, and Anadolu later indicated that four children were among the 24 injured.

Evacuation by trains and buses

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations announced the evacuation of passengers from the accident site using two trains and buses.

Meanwhile, a temporary shelter was set up in the village of Briandino, and over 150 specialists and approximately 40 pieces of equipment were mobilized at the scene, according to Anadolu.

TASS previously reported on over 100 rescuers and 32 pieces of equipment as the operation was expanded.

Local authorities announced that passengers were to be transported to Ulianovsk-Central Station, where a medical assessment and assistance point would be set up to facilitate their onward journey on other trains.

Investigation opened after the accident

Following the accident, the Transport Prosecutor’s Office and the Russian Investigative Committee launched investigations into compliance with railway safety and operational regulations.

The exact cause of the derailment had not yet been announced at the time of the initial reports.
