The 9.7-mile extension will connect the South Bay to Inglewood and Los Angeles International Airport via Crenshaw, Mid-City, and the Fairfax District, continuing through West Hollywood, Hollywood, and the Hollywood Bowl. It is designed to create a continuous north–south rail corridor through central Los Angeles, linking four major rail lines and six busy bus routes.

Supervisor and Metro Board Member Lindsey P. Horvath said:

This is a transformational moment for Los Angeles. Today’s approval of the K Line Northern Extension San Vicente–Fairfax alignment will finally connect communities and make it possible to travel from LAX to the Hollywood Bowl on one line.

This amendment delivers both urgency and certainty. With the leadership of Mayor Bass and Mayor Heilman, we are investing intentionally in connection, community, and opportunity, while answering the fierce urgency of a rising generation counting on us to get this right—and get the K Line North done now.

The extension is projected to serve around 100,000 daily riders, provide access to 125,000 jobs within walking distance of stations, and serve more than 325,000 residents who depend on public transport. The project is also expected to improve access to education, healthcare, and essential services across the region.

Construction is estimated to create over 10,000 union jobs, generating 9.7 billion USD in wages and more than 22 billion USD in overall economic activity for Los Angeles County.

The board considered public input for 1.5 hours, with over 900 people registering to comment, before approving the motion.
