Tramwaje Warszawskie, the public company responsible for operating and managing the tram network in Warsaw, has signed a contract for the preparation of complete project documentation for a section of the tram line connecting Zachodnia Station and Wola, a central district of the Polish capital.

The contract was signed with Databout, which will also be responsible for obtaining the necessary administrative agreements and decisions to start and carry out the construction work. The contract is worth PLN 14.4 million (EUR 3.4 million) including VAT.

The project is part of a bypass connection that will allow comfortable travel between neighborhoods without having to transit through the city center.

“The new tram section from Wola to the West Station will connect with the route currently under construction between Grójecka Street and the West Station. This will create a fast and convenient tram connection between Wola and Ochota, and in the long term, even to Wilanów,” said Rafał Trzaskowski, Mayor of Warsaw.

Design of the new tram line in Warsaw

The planned route will connect the underground station currently under construction at the West Station with Kasprzaka Street, thus facilitating the connection between the Ochota (southwest of the city) and Wola (northwest) districts. The line will pass through the tunnel already built under the railway station, then through a new tunnel and further along Prądzyńskiego and Krzyżanowskiego Streets. The length of the new route will be 1.4 km, of which about 900 meters will be underground.

The project also includes the reorganisation of the existing station complex located on Kasprzaka Street. The final form of the transport hub will be determined by the designer in consultation with the municipal authorities.

Two stages of the project

The first stage of the project covers the tram section from Kasprzaka Street to the Warsaw West station, and the second stage covers the construction of the tram infrastructure and technical equipment for the tunnel already built under the Warsaw West station.

The complete documentation, together with the environmental decision and all necessary agreements, is to be submitted within 43 months (3.5 years) of the contract signing, and construction is planned after 2030.

The new section is part of the extensive program to expand the tram network in Warsaw and is included in the construction project for the “Tram Line to Wilanów.”

The planned route will also facilitate access to the West Station, which is becoming one of the most important transport hubs in Warsaw. This year, trams will reach the first underground station at the West Station, coming from Ochota.
