ABB has secured an order from Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. to supply propulsion equipment and Train Control and Management System (TCMS) software for the expansion of the Mumbai Metro network.

The contract covers Mumbai Metro Line 5 (Orange Line), which will connect Thane and Kalyan via Bhiwandi, and Line 6 (Pink Line), running from Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli.

The project involves the supply of integrated traction and control solutions for a total of 40 six-car trainsets. Of these, 18 trainsets are designated for Line 6 and 22 for Line 5.

ABB’s scope of work includes traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors and TCMS software. The equipment is designed to support reliable operation and efficient energy use over the trains’ service life.

Manufacturing will be carried out in India, with converters produced at ABB’s Bengaluru facility and traction motors manufactured in Vadodara. The project will be supported by local engineering, testing and service teams.

Roger Buchmann, Global Business Line Head- Rail Systems, ABB said:

This order marks ABB’s entry into the 25 kV AC metro segment in India, a significant milestone that expands our technology presence in the metro rail sector. As more Indian cities develop high-capacity metro systems, this project demonstrates how energy-efficient propulsion technologies and intelligent control solutions can enable low-emission, reliable urban transport. By combining optimised power usage with localised manufacturing, we are supporting sustainable mobility, reduced lifecycle energy consumption, and a lower environmental footprint for India’s growing metro networks.

The contract builds on a strategic collaboration agreement signed between ABB and Titagarh in 2023, which set out plans for cooperation on metro rail projects in India. As part of the current order, the two companies will work together on localisation and phased co-production of traction motors, traction converters and auxiliary converters.

The project aligns with India’s wider policy focus on domestic manufacturing under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. By expanding local production and engineering capabilities, the order is expected to contribute to the development of a domestic metro rolling stock supply chain.
